Training Squad in Canberra

NYID’s iconic sports-art performance Training Squad delivers a smack-down to all those skeptics who say art and sport should never mix. Muscular, intelligent, provocative and artful, Training Squad, plays where no one has dared play before.

Lifting slogans, banter, inspirational rants, anthems and team spirit out of the arena and onto the street, the squad mashes the gestural iconography of seminal sportsplays and umpiring semaphore with lessons in technique, instructions in appropriate behaviour and a larrikin professionalism that is distinctively Australian.

NYID Artistic Director David Pledger will sculpt a special force from elite athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the best of Canberra’s physical performance brigade.

Training Squad
will bring to Canberra a rigorous style and an ironic twist as it spreads out across the Centenary of Canberra Birthday Celebrations on March 11 2013 and the AIS Open Day on April 28, 2013. A tougher bunch of burly griffins will not have been seen before on-site in-city in the national capital. As the squad says:

This is not drama.
This is not dance.
This is not opera.
This is art.
This is sport.

Training Squad is a Centenary of Canberra project, proudly supported by the ACT Government and the Australian Government
